The Murder of Wi-Fi?
Interesting piece on cellular phone companies' perceived threat to their business from Wi-Fi. The solution? Perpetrate Wi-Fi's demise. Kinda like when GM engineered a similar hit on various California transit systems.

I run an 802.11g wireless network in my house, it's great. When guests come over I give them a password and they're on the internet. No way do I want to go backwards to slower technology.

I'd say Ma Bell hates Voice Over IP (VOIP). If you figure what your phone bill is for a low-bandwidth data line (compared to the DSL or even bulk), you'll be shocked. I pay about $40 a month for DSL at 1.5 Mbits. A digital voice signal is maybe 50 Kbits. So my DSL has enough bandwidth for a few dozen voice lines. But I pay about another $40 for (single) phone line access. And I can't just buy the DSL without the phone line (cable is an alternative if I want to dump phone / DSL). In rural Japan I had 100 MBit DSL for less than my puny 1.5 MBits DSL here in the US. In short, voice bandwidth is basically free in the civilized world today. Whatever you are being charged is probably way too much.
