Katrina Helps New Orleans Fight Fire Ants

An upisde to Katrina: the possible elimination of fire ants in New Orleans. But thousands of unattended swimming pools are breeding mosquitos. But enterprising pest-control workers have been putting fish in the pools to keep the mosquito population down! See:

  • The fish in question is Gambusia affinis, the "mosquito fish", so named b/c they eat larvae. I don't remember that they eat so many as to kill off the mosquito population, but it's worth a try.
