Why 85%
There is a ban on offshore drilling for 85% of the US coast. Congress just voted to keep it in place. Why 85%? Why not 100%? Let's guess where the 15% is. What is the 15% getting for being the place where the other 85% don't want to be? http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/C/CONGRESS_ENERGY?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2006-05-18-20-32-34

Wow. I knew the Florida gulf coast has resisted this successfully for many years. But I do recall seeing oil wells right off the coast in L.A. I remember because the had this incredibly cheezy fake palm tree to make it look like some sort of island. I also recall that there was a functioning well on the grounds of Beverly Hills High School.
Boy, those Texas and Louisiana people sure got a great deal. Yes, you can have poverty, illness and pollution on your coastline, too! Just let the oil industry in, they'll do the rest!
