Code Red

Well, as I'm about to take an international flight, this one gets personal. The US raised its security level to Code Red for the first time ever. Due to some possible plot in the UK to try to blow up airliners. I can't help but think that so many things are wrong with this picture. Mostly, why is the press called in so early and given so much information? (I basically learned more than I would ever want to know about how to bomb an aircraft this morning on ABC News). In the old days, wouldn't we count on CIA, NSA, FBI and all the other TLAs ("Three Letter Acronyms") to take care of these things, usually quietly? Empires always meet this sort of resistance, and it should be dealt with appropriately.
The terrorist is a person with who tries to get his way through the use of fear, because his ideas usually fail to convince. He is even powerless to use real violence, so fear of violence is all he has. I am against this person, no matter what banner he fights under. Whether he is IRA, Al Queda or RNC. Where is Winston Churchill when you need him?

  • I agree with your observation about the media. And why do we even hear about this before all of the suspects are arrested? On the subject of air travel, another issue that has become totally ridiculous is carry-on baggage. I can't stand it when I'm on a plane in the aisle behind someone who's trying to put an obviously oversized bag into the overhead bin. Here's the way it should be: when you check in at the ticket counter, the clerk gives you a box for your carry-on stuff. If it doesn't fit in the box with the lid closed, you can't take it - period. Once on the plane, each seat has a numbered cubby in the overhead just big enough for the box. Your box goes in your cubby at your seat. Finally, no freight goes on the plane until all luggage is put on. Everyone's bags fly on the same plane. Done.

  • I have not been able to put my finger on it, but there is something wrong with the secrecy on one hand (Gitmo, secret east European prisons, secret trials, etc) and then the fast and large information dumps to the press. Aren't these guys in the UK the ones who should be whisked off to Gitmo on a private CIA jet? Why are they on TV, and so quickly?

  • I will go one step further. The real, certified terrorists are on TV and their names published (Britain names 19 suspects in terror plot as Pakistan announces 5 new arrests. So this raises the unconortable question: if the real terrorists are named and on TV, who exactly is in Gitmo, and why are their names kept secret?

  • Great question. Let's do a FOIA for the names of the guys on Gitmo.

  • Yeah. G'head. Do a FOIA on the Gitmo guys. Odds are...YOUR name will be on the list then, too.

  • I'm still bothered by this. Why aren't these guys hauled off to Gitmo and 'interrogated' (as they say). Isn't that the sole stated purpose for these places?
