Season's Greetings!
With predictions slightly more specific than Pat Robertson, the NOAA has released it's hurricane predictions for the new hurricane season. The Morning Line: 10 hurricanes, 4 to 6 major. In a related story, there is a push to add a new "Category 6" storm to the Saffir-Simpson scale. Reminds me of the ampilfier in Spinal Tap that 'goes to 11'.
Our local paper picked up a scathing story about the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that everyone should read. It was originally in the Washington Post, but here is a link from the Salt Lake Tribune (I didn't see it picked up by too many other papers). Though a completely factual report, it is published under 'opinion':

More ammo for Dr. Murphy-Godcheaux's contention that NOLA has bad levees.

Also it is just a piecemeal system built up over a few hundred years. With all sorts of overlapping jurisdictions (what the heck is a 'levee board' for anyway?) A city like this needs a proper drainage system. Add that to the incompetentce of the Corps and it's a wonder the place ever stayed dry.
